Aflam Film Club to Screen 'Le Grand Voyage' in Abu Dhabi
Moroccan director and writer, Ismaël Ferroukhi to showcase his award winning film in the UAE’s Capital
Abu Dhabi 23 July, 2012: AFLAM, a monthly film club that aims to show the best of Arabic independent cinema in Abu Dhabi, will be screening award winning film, ‘Le Grand Voyage’ by Moroccan director Ismaël Ferroukhi, winner of several international awards. This screening will be part of AFLAM’s Ramadan offering and will be showing at VOX Cinema – Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi on 25 July at 10pm.
‘Le Grand Voyage’ looks at the life of a teenager living in southern France in 2004 who is forced to drive his conservative father to Mecca to perform pilgrimage just weeks before his college entrance exams. Through their journey across France, Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, the two are forced to confront the generational and cultural tensions that characterise their strained relationship. The encounters they have along the way heighten their ideological and religious differences between father and son. As the story unfolds, their journey across Europe and into the Middle East transforms their relationship from hostility to recognition and eventually to a deep understanding.
‘Le Grand Voyage’ was shown at the 2004 Venice Film Festival where it received the Luigi De Laurentiis award for best first film.
In addition to the feature film, AFLAM will screen TROPFEST Arabia 2011 shortlisted film “They Say,” based around the idea of how quickly information can be distorted through various social media platforms, phone calls and word of mouth. The six-minute short film by Egyptian filmmaker, Ahmed Ghazal was independently selected for third prize at the inaugural TROPFEST Arabia in Abu Dhabi last year.
Supported by twofour54, AFLAM was launched based on the success of a film club that Nayla Al Khaja and D-SEVEN Motion Pictures founded in Dubai in November 2007, and aims to provide a platform for all film industry members and fans to network and view quality regional films in Abu Dhabi. Subtitled in English, all AFLAM films have an international appeal, most having been screened at major film festivals around the globe. The founders of AFLAM are proud to have introduced such a platform to the Abu Dhabi society and continue to support a vibrant film culture in the UAE.
Offering complimentary seats, Arabic and English subtitles, a chance to talk to film directors and a forum for industry professionals and film fans to network, AFLAM encourages guests to arrive on time as seating is offered on a “first come first served” basis. Guests are invited to obtain their complimentary tickets at the AFLAM registration desk and to visit the AFLAM networking lounge at Vox Cinemas Marina Mall Abu Dhabi, both open from 9:00pm. Guests can also register on www.aflamclub.com for tickets.
Brought to you by D-SEVEN Motion Pictures, and riding on the success of The Scene Club, the new film club AFLAM is the new home of modern Arabic cinema in Abu Dhabi. It is a monthly film club that will highlight and celebrate the best of independent Arabic films and filmmakers, showing independent films to the Abu Dhabi community and creating a film network for like-minded people to meet and share ideas. This film club is open to everyone – not just Arabic speakers, but people of all backgrounds. AFLAM’s films will have an international appeal with many having been previously screened at major film festivals across the globe. It’s a club for you, offering complimentary seats, a chance to talk to film directors, and a place for film professionals and film fans to network. Tickets are free and available on a first come, first serve basis but please note members get priority access.
