Al-Hakawati, a proposed giant statue in Dubai

I hope this doesn’t see light, and I don’t think it will, visiondivision has proposed a project to build this huge statue in Zaabeel Park in Dubai, it’s called Al-Hakawati, Arabic for a storyteller, and it will feature a children’s library in its base and various spaces to read. A while back, Dubai Municipality rejected a proposal to build a tower that is shaped like a man wearing traditional clothes, it was ugly, at least that’s what I thought.

  • 1. It’s too idiotically plain with no artistic value!
    2. Isn’t that “haram” by Islamic laws! I know Dubai is not KSA, but still, didn’t any religious figure object to that!

  • Looks like Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen.
Anyways, as said by Ghassan Yonis it looks awful. Its nothing but a man made male figure. what is the use of having such a huge statue as a children’s library.

  • @triplem – how do u know it’s a male?? looks very androgynous!

  • I think it looks great. and I think it would be really cool for the children of Dubai to have this new friend. The book reading would probably go up in this category and the Zaabeel Park would get a great injection aswell.
If I had money I would build it myself!

  • That is so ugly, I don’t think it will see light as it will be seen as a statue of non believers from Mecca days, atleast that what the Islamists will say. Why Dubai should have the tallest, largest, biggest, whats next fattest? Not one medical or science research center!

  • Garaf…what is the hell they do in Dubai???? :S

  • I can understand where this misconception of a proposal comes from. Storytellers carry a great spirit, our art is all encompassing and looks through times. Yet storytellers are human-size, powerful and humble at the same time. We do not wish eternity to ourselves, we die and others come and continue the work. There is no single shape to a storyteller and no need to engrave one in people’s memories since a truly great storyteller disappears when a story is told.
I am happy to hear about the library and the activities that will take place in it.

  • It is haram to built a statue like this. It look like the Emirati want to idol the statue. They can replace the figure to “an open book” instead of a man. There is a sculpture as in Kelantan, Malaysia. Furthermore the idea is to tell people about the story, although not in the book, but the story can be booked. Don’t let the statue be one of the cause of end of the world.

  • YaAllah..selamatkan lah Islam..YaAllah..Save Islam..

  • Gosh…wonder what can such statue can do for us..?such a wasting of money, time, energy to built it..isn’t it…?
    May GOD save the Ummah…

  • I agree with you nazar.. Since it’s a library anyway…
Why must you put a huge human structure?!!
They would be idiots if they proceed with it…
It’s definitely HARAM in Islam.. No doubt about that…

  • yup, very da ugly…n its nonsense! better they use the money to help the Palestinians.

  • SUPERB!!!!
