Amsterdam, September 3, 2015 – Two weeks ago Booking.com began its quest to find and create GIFs out of the best shots of summer, in order to find out WHO WON BOOKING SUMMER. Thousands of photos and a grand gallery of GIFs later, only one question remains… do we have a winner?
Booking.com partnered with leading digital artists to GIFify the greatest shots of summer. The artists – Cari Vander Yacht, Chris Timmons, Justin Gammon and James Kerr – were locked in a room and put to work. Truckloads of GIFs were created and shared back to the owners via social media, and the winners were celebrated daily across the web and GIF-mortalized on Booking.com’s Wing It Hub and on Giphy.
With the official end of the summer season only days away, Booking.com now gives us one final burst of summer greatness by combining the best GIFs into a celebratory WHO WON BOOKING SUMMER film.
Created with Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam, the WHO WON BOOKING SUMMER? activation follows ‘Wing It’, Booking.com’s integrated campaign that launched at the beginning of the summer and asked people to Wing Everything – except their accommodation.
Pepijn Rijvers, Booking.com’s Chief Marketing Officer, says: “With the summer now drawing to a close, we’ve had a lot of fun seeing what a spontaneous summer has meant to everyone that has shared their holiday photos with us. This campaign proved what we have been seeing for a long time…. People like to be spontaneous, which is why we’ve developed our mobile apps and websites to enable everyone to simply seize the moment and go!”
Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam Creative Director, Sean Condon, comments: “We’ve seen some crazy stuff over the last week. Thanks for playing, everyone. We can’t wait to see your epic winter shots.”
All the GIFs can be enjoyed on www.booking.com/wingit or by searching #WingItYeah on Instagram or Twitter.
ABOUT THE GIF ARTISTS
James Kerr (aka Scorpion Dagger)
James Kerr, through animation and digital collage, hopes to convey his vision of the world around him by repurposing elements from the art canon in such a manner to give the works a new life outside of the canvas on which they originally appear. With his work, Kerr explores the often mundane and, at times, bizarre parts of modern life. Since 2012, he has been concentrating on his animated GIF project Scorpion Dagger. His work has been featured on numerous blogs and news sites – such as The Creators Project, Sploid, The Huffington Post, and Wired. His work has also been exhibited in numerous galleries around the world.
Cari Vander Yacht
Cari Vander Yacht started making GIFs in her free time using found photos she’d been collecting from second hand stores. Since then, her animations have been featured on The Creator’s Project, It’s Nice That, and Fast Company. An Oregon native, Cari is now based in New York where she splits her time between animation and illustration for clients such as Nike, The New York Times, and Businessweek.
From humble beginnings as “that kid who draws funny pictures,” Chris went on to attend the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where he learned to make those pictures move. He has animated for Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel and NBC Sports, winning an Emmy and scoring some sweet preschool swag along the way. Recently Chris “discovered” the internet, animating content for top YouTube channels, but still “keeps it real” creating his own quirky GIFs which he will happily continue to do until he retires in 100 years.
A designer and illustrator living in Greenville, South Carolina, Justin specialises in branding, illustration, and cover design and has a penchant for the weird. Some might say Justin is a lovable curmudgeon, but that’s what happens when you’ve been working in the design and advertising world for over 15 years. Through the years, Justin has helped create award-winning branding and design work, but it is currently his illustration and animation projects that give him new hope in the world of marketing. Who knew animated GIFs were the antidote for marketing burnout? Justin also acts as photographer, curator and writer for his personal blog, Weirdotoys.
