Reporting to the Editor, the News/Business Sub-Editor will function independently to edit at speed and with optimum efficiency and accuracy all hard and soft news and business content intended for publication in the newspaper.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Thoroughly checking, correcting, subbing, rewriting, proofreading and improving all copy.
• Checking copy for accuracy, inconsistencies, correcting spellings, mistakes and grammatical errors, and rewriting copy when necessary so that the copy flows and reads well and adheres to the in-house editorial style guide.
• Ensuring copy (stories) fit a particular word count, as required for various editorial pages in the newspaper by cutting or expanding editorial material, as and when necessary.
• Writing headlines that capture the essence of the story, while being clever or amusing.
• Writing stand-firsts or ‘sells’ (brief introduction which sums up the story) to go below headlines.
• Liaising with editorial team members to clarify facts and details about stories.
• Checking facts in copy to ensure they are accurate, that they adhere to copywrite laws, are not libellous or go against the newspaper’s editorial policy.
• Writing picture captions, text boxes’ headers, blurbs, etc., quickly and without any errors.
• Laying out editorial pages in QuarkXPress or InDesign, as and when needed.
• Ensuring that copy and page stone and off-stone deadlines are adhered to.
• Being able to add or delete copy to meet fast evolving news stories, being Internet-savvy.
• Attending daily editorial conferences, as well as other regular meetings.
