Milestone marks third Participant Media / Image Nation film in a row to reach the $100M mark, and fourth Image Nation film to exceed the $100M threshold
Abu Dhabi, UAE, June 7, 2012: Abu Dhabi based production company Image Nation is celebrating this week as its latest co-production, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, passes the $100 million mark in worldwide box office sales.
The film was financed and presented by the Participant Media/ Imagenation Fund in association with Fox Searchlight, which is distributing the film worldwide. It premiered in London in February this year, and has since travelled the world, including the UAE, receiving much acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
The milestone marks the third film in a row to pass $100M worldwide for the Participant / Image Nation partnership, following the success of recent releases Contagion and The Help, which grossed over $200 million worldwide. In addition, Ghost Rider – Spirit of Vengeance, produced by Image Nation and Hyde Park also recently grossed more than $130 million.
The achievement has seen The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel secure its place in the top-ten grossing films for the past four weeks in the US, despite platforming with a limited screen count in comparison to other summer blockbusters. The film is also the only picture in the top ten this week to add theatres to its count, and has now gone on to successfully pass many other high-profile productions released on a similar limited platform, including titles such as Hurt Locker, Notes on a Scandal, Into the Wild, 127 Hours and Last King of Scotland.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel follows a group of British retirees who decide to “outsource” their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past.
