At the heart of Nokia’s business remains the vision of connecting people to what matters most. However, the way in which people communicate is constantly evolving. From talk to text, email to chat, individuals to social networks – people across the world are connecting in new and innovative ways.
On the PC, email was one of the killer applications that drove early Internet use. It’s become so essential to our daily lives that most of us demand constant access to it. And for the next generation of Internet users, staying connected through chat and social networks will be even more critical, but this requires an increased level of mobility … access that is with us all the time.
This growing need for mobile networking, coupled with profound consumer insights into how users want and need to interact with technology, has shaped Nokia’s own strategy around its messaging solutions.
At Nokia, we see three clear target audiences for messaging solutions: first time users predominantly in the emerging markets; consumers who already have email and IM accounts but require easy access to these on their mobile device; and corporate users for whom the concept of “out of office” simply no longer exists.
Connecting the Unconnected
For 75 % of the world’s population, an estimated 4 billion people, that don’t yet have an email account, there is Ovi Mail by Nokia. Unlike any other email service currently available, Ovi Mail is as easy to set up and use from a mobile phone as it is from a PC. When one considers the low PC penetration figures in many emerging markets, it is clear that mobile will be the medium for the Internet revolution that these first time users have been waiting for.
Ovi Mail is optimized for Nokia’s simplest devices such as Nokia 2700, which provide affordable and reliable solutions to many in the emerging markets. The basic principles of Nokia’s idea of mobile email remain – easy to set up and easy to use. Today, it’s available in 20 different languages with more than 8 million users, making communications even simpler for the newly connected.
All the services you know and love – now on your mobile
For the 25 percent of the world’s population that already has email or instant messaging accounts, easy-to-use mobile access to these existing accounts is something that Nokia is focused on delivering. Whether it’s the leading brands like Yahoo!Mail, Gmail and Hotmail or local ISP services, an increasing number of consumers have one or several accounts that they regularly use for either business or personal communication. Our research reveals that 80% of people want email and IM on their mobile phones – they’re consistently the two most asked-for services. Nokia gets this. Our aim is to provide an open platform that allows consumers to use all of the existing services that they know and love, whether this be for email, chat or social networking. We simply make it easier with Nokia Messaging Service.
Nokia Messaging is Nokia’s consumer messaging service that enables consumers to mobilize up to 10 personal email accounts such as Hotmail and Yahoo!Mail on one device. They can also mobilize their favourite IM communities like Yahoo! Gmail, and Windows Live Messenger directly on their Nokia smartphone. The service is easy to set-up and easy to use – getting email up and running on your device will take no more than 60 seconds, or three clicks – you only need to know your email address and password to do it. This capability is already available on more than 100 Nokia smartphone models, including Nokia C3; Nokia C6; Nokia E5 and Nokia E72 and allows you to instantly connect with all leading consumer e-mail solutions, covering an estimated 90% of the current global consumer accounts. Users are able to read, send, forward and reply to e-mails, as well as download and attach files directly from their mobile phone
In addition to your existing IM communities, you can access other popular applications such as Nimbuzz, e-buddy and fring, simply by downloading them from Ovi Store directly from your smartphone. In fact, with Ovi Store, you have access to thousands of applications, games, ringtones and much more to ensure that your smartphone is as unique as you are.
And staying in touch with friends on the go has never been simpler – access to Facebook and Twitter is available directly from your homescreen on Nokia smartpones such as the Nokia N97mini, Nokia N8, Nokia E72 and Nokia E5. Other popular social networks such as MySpace, YouTube and Orkut are all a click away.
There are still plenty of questions people have when it comes to mobile messaging. Does it work with their device? Is it easy to use? Can they afford it? The good news is that Nokia has made messaging easy to use, available on every form factor and at every price point. And to avoid “bill-shock” for consumers at the end of the month, Nokia has been working with service providers on data bundles for messaging solutions on Nokia smartphones.
If you get a new Nokia smartphone, chances are it already supports mobile messaging. There’s no need to buy a second mobile email device or sacrifice the camera phone you desire just because you want to email or chat functionality as well … welcome to getting exactly what you want.
Let’s get down to business
The concept of an office being a fixed space with a desk, landline and PC is long gone. For many people, their office is now their motor vehicle, the airport lounge or even the corner coffee shop. This fundamental shift in how people work has resulted in an even more fundamental shift in the tools required to deliver results. One thing is clear – it’s all about mobile access.
As a global brand leader, Nokia understands that partnering with other leaders is always a smart idea. That’s why we pride ourselves on our global alliance with Microsoft and IBM, and the value that brings to our users, especially those in the corporate space.
Through our collaboration, setting up your corporate email on your Nokia smartphone like the Nokia E72, Nokia N8 or Nokia E5, is the simplest part of your job. All you need is your email address, user name, password, domain and server address – and in a few seconds, you’re connected – no more waiting in line for the business helpdesk.
Nokia offers more than 50 smartphones that can directly access business email on Microsoft Outlook or IBM Lotus Notes, which account for 90% of the world’s business email accounts. Through our alliance with Microsoft, several Nokia smartphones such as the Nokia E52 or Nokia E72, now also enable access to Communicator Mobile, allowing people to see their colleagues’ availability at-a-glance and click to communicate with them using the best method – chat, text, e-mail, or a phone call – straight from their Nokia smartphone.
And the best part is that you don’t need to sacrifice any of the other features you love in your smartphone – outstanding camera, free Ovi Maps with free global voice guided navigation, Ovi Store with access to endless applications, mobile music player and sleek design in a number of form factors – are all part of the deal.
And speaking of deals, with Nokia smartphones, your email and corporate IM service is available without a subscription fee or additional license fees. As with our consumer service, Nokia also partners with local operators on business value plans with data to ensure a seamless and predictable business solution for you. You are now only ‘out of office’ when you choose to be.
Your messaging, your way
At Nokia, we believe in freedom of choice. We believe that all consumers should have access to the services they want, when and where they want them. By working with other global and local brand leaders, developers and operators, we are proud to present a whole new world of messaging.
