Best Global Brands 2008
Coca-Cola maintained its leading position as the world’s top brand, beating PEPSI, which also maintained its previous ranking at 26. Also in the beverages category, Nescafe has dropped from 24 in 2007 to 28 in 2008.
Out of the 100 brands on the Best Global Brands list, 52 came from the United States of America, 10 came from Germany, 8 from France, 7 from Japan, 5 from Switzerland, 4 from Italy, while the rest came from different countries such as Netherlands, UK, Canada, among others.
In the automotive category, Toyota maintained its leading position and ranked 6th. Mercedes-Benz dropped one spot and ranked 11th this year, followed by BMW at 13, while the Japanese Luxury car brand Lexus moved up two spots and ranked 92. Ferrari made it to this list in 2008 and ranked 93, while its German rival, Porsche, came 75th.
Intel led the computer hardware category and maintained its 7th position among best global brands, followed by HP at 12, Apple, which moved up from 33 to 24. In computer software category, Microsoft dropped one spot and came 3rd, followed by Oracle that moved up from 27 to 23.
American Express led the financial services and came 15th, followed by Citi Bank, which dropped from 11 to 19, probably because of the mortgage crisis that hit the world’s largest bank. HSBC came third in this category and dropped from 23 to 27. American International Group Inc. (AIG), which witnessed a tragic fall last week, dropped from 47 to 54 on the best brands index.
Google moved up by 10 positions and ranked 10th, followed by the leading internet services brands eBay at 46, Amazon.com at 58 and Yahoo!, which dropped from 55 to 65.
Restaurants, McDonald’s maintained its previous ranking and came 8th, followed by KFC, which dropped from 60 to 64, Pizza Hut dropping from 74 to 81.
Nike is beating Adidas in the sporting goods category, Nike remained 29th among top brands, while Adidas dropped one spot and came 70th.
In the transportation sector, UPS dropped two spots and ranked 30, while FedEx, a new entry to this list, came 99th.
