MEC MENA expands regional operations http://jazarah.net/mec-mena-expands-regional-operations/ http://jazarah.net/mec-mena-expands-regional-operations/#comments Mon, 17 Sep 2012 17:29:17 +0000 Samer Marzouq http://jazarah.net/?p=47983
  • Media buying and planning firm grows operations in Egypt and Qatar
  • Wins Nestlé Middle East account for media buying, planning and digital engagement services
  • Marks 10th anniversary celebrations with major client event in Dubai, including keynote address by author of The Developing World
  • Dubai, UAE; September 17, 2012: MEC MENA, the region’s leading media specialist firm and a member of the MENACOM Group, highlighted its ongoing growth in the Middle East and North Africa, including especially significant expansion in Egypt and Qatar. Underlining its growing business partnerships in the region, MEC MENA had recently won the prestigious Nestlé Middle East account for media buying, planning and digital engagement services.

The Chief Executive Officer of MEC MENA, Mohan Nambiar, speaking at the firm’s 10th anniversary celebrations in Dubai, said that his firm has appointed a new General Manager for Egypt, Wassim Hmaidan, and for Qatar, Pradeep Menon, who is also overseeing MEC’s operations in Bahrain. In addition to those senior appointments, MEC is growing its overall staff strength across the 17 markets it serves through 13 offices in the wider MENA region.

“A decade after the founding of MEC MENA, the firm has never been more strongly positioned for future growth,” said Joseph Ghossoub, Chairman and CEO of the MENACOM Group. “An innovative company, focused on active engagement with its clients, partners and the media, MEC continues to increase its range of specialist services, its total staff size and its ability to stay ahead of market trends, especially in the area of digital media.”

Reflecting MEC’s focus on creativity, bestselling author and entrepreneur Fredrik Härén provided the keynote address at the firm’s 10th anniversary celebrations, bringing to life the key insights from his latest book, The Developing World. More than 300 industry professionals attended the event, which took place over two days, at the Ritz-Carlton, Dubai International Financial Centre.

MEC’s Nambiar said that his firm recognised the enormous importance of hiring, training and retaining young staff in the MENA region, where new media continues to rapidly transform the communications landscape.

“Here in the Arab world, where 200 million people are under the age of 25, we cannot succeed as a firm if we do not understand the hopes, fears and aspirations of our largest demographic,” Nambiar said. “That’s why we are focused on identifying the next generation of leaders at MEC – including recruiting them directly from universities here in the UAE and across the Middle East.

“We are also focused on providing training to our existing staff, with special attention to digital media,” he said. “In the past year alone, we have invested more than 1,000 man hours training many of our over 240 staff, highlighting our commitment in this area.”

The tenth anniversary celebratory event of MEC MENA was sponsored by Choueiri Group and Yahoo! Maktoob.

MEC was founded a decade ago, following the first-ever merger in WPP’s history of two of the industry’s most innovative independent businesses: The Media Edge and CIA. In 2005, MEC claimed the active engagement space before anyone dared to put their name to it and stole a march over its peers. In 2007, MEC MENA launched its digital specialist unit MEC Interaction; the following year, MEC introduced the region’s only specialised TV planning division and launched MEC Access, a unit specialising in Sports, Sponsorship and Cause marketing services.

In 2010, the agency led the way again by integrating its specialist Analytics and Insight groups. The move was critical in being able to address the future needs of clients, providing bigger and better cross-over opportunities by holistically approaching digital and traditional media in the purchase pathway.

MEC is also an industry leader in exploring digital platforms. The path-breaking MEC Interaction Academy, its digital acceleration programme, is being rolled out across the company’s operations in Asia, North and South America.

James Bond on a secret mission in global Heineken® campaign http://jazarah.net/james-bond-on-a-secret-mission-in-global-heineken-campaign/ http://jazarah.net/james-bond-on-a-secret-mission-in-global-heineken-campaign/#comments Sat, 15 Sep 2012 05:34:26 +0000 Samer Marzouq http://jazarah.net/?p=47932 Daniel Craig stars alongside SKYFALL Bond actress Bérénice Marlohe in an innovative new campaign

Amsterdam, 14 September 2012 – Heineken®, the world’s leading premium beer brand, today announced a thrilling new TV and digital campaign, in anticipation of the release of the 23rd James Bond adventure, SKYFALL™, which sees Daniel Craig bring his explosive portrayal of James Bond to a Heineken ad for the very first time. Challenging consumers to defy his enemies and ‘Crack the Case’, viewers will be taken on an epic train journey alongside stunning Bond newcomer Bérénice Marlohe.

Launching on the 20th September, the interactive experience begins exactly where the TV advert leaves off, with viewers invited onto a train by the smouldering Bérénice before it embarks on a voyage through a spectacular vista of snowy mountains. Putting viewers through their paces, a series of gruelling tests will lead them to ‘Crack the Case’ whilst protecting its contents from ferocious Bond villains.

Crack the Case Heineken Campaign with James Bond

Rolling out worldwide, the ‘Crack the Case’ campaign will launch on multiple platforms on 20th September, through a combination of a new 60s film (TVC & online) with a personalized interactive experience. This powerful combination of ATL, digital, PR and experiential will ensure that Heineken® and Bond are able to reach out to more consumers than ever before and propel the campaign to new heights.

Building on a 15 year relationship with the Bond franchise, the ‘Crack the Case’ campaign takes viewers into a moving train somewhere deep in snow-covered mountains, providing them with the opportunity to be a secret agent themselves. Transitioning viewers seamlessly from the TVC, Bond actress Bérénice Marlohe tantalises viewers by inviting them to help her crack a mysterious case and outwit the menacing villains – a challenge which encourages a virtual voyage of participation and discovery.

Crack the Case Heineken Campaign with James Bond

The ‘Crack the Case’ campaign was created by advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam. The campaign TV ad, full details of which will only be revealed in time for September 20th launch, was directed by award winning Dutch filmmaker Matthijs Van Heijningen Jnr.

Igniting global excitement and driving mass participation, an exclusive online teaser will be released ahead of the campaign launch on 20th September to a pocket of global super fans of Bond, incentivising these top fans to watch the TVC once it launches and leaving them wanting more.

In addition to exploding conversation across digital, social and owned media platforms, the offline execution of ‘Crack the Case’ will bring the drama of the virtual experience ‘live’ to a broader audience across the globe in October. Several markets will host unique Heineken® experiences in iconic locations, inviting members of the public to test their nerve, win exclusive prizes and share in the excitement of the global release of SKYFALL this fall.

Alexis Nasard, Chief Commercial Officer of Heineken® said: “The creativity and progressiveness of the Heineken® brand combined with the legendary James Bond franchise will provide viewers with high entertainment values. Not only a hero, Bond is the ultimate ‘Man of the World’ – confident, resourceful and ready for new experiences, personifying the values of the Heineken® brand.”

Dubai Lynx Changes Name to “International Festival of Creativity” http://jazarah.net/dubai-lynx-changes-name-to-international-festival-of-creativity/ http://jazarah.net/dubai-lynx-changes-name-to-international-festival-of-creativity/#comments Wed, 12 Sep 2012 08:54:01 +0000 Samer Marzouq http://jazarah.net/?p=47842 Plus Dates Confirmed as: 10-13 March – Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai

12 September 2012 – The organisers of Dubai Lynx have today announced that its name will change from ‘International Advertising Festival’ to ‘International Festival of Creativity’. The move serves to better reflect the evolvement of the industry from one that has previously focused on traditional creative advertising to one that involves creativity in all forms of communications.

The Dubai International Festival of Creativity is the leading awards and festival for creative excellence in advertising and communications in the Middle East and North Africa and the must-attend event on the region’s industry calendar. Since its launch in 2007, the number of entry categories at Dubai Lynx has more than doubled due to creativity stretching across a greater number of forms of communications. Held at the Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, next year’s event will take place 10-13 March 2013, and will once again include an unbeatable line-up of international jurors who will use their expertise to award the best in creativity.

Emma Lancaster, Festival Director of Dubai Lynx, says about the change, “Entering their 7th year, the Dubai Lynx awards are established as the must win awards for the MENA industry. As organisers, we always strive to keep pace and what is clear is that creativity crosses a great number of platforms, from social media to technologies to user-generated content, meaning that to term the event as an advertising festival is no longer relevant.”

The brand new 2013 Dubai Lynx website will be live from 13 October and will contain up-to-date information on the event including full details of how to register and enter. Held in association with the IAA – UAE Chapter and supported by Dubai Media City, the festival’s full programme will be released early 2013.

Sir John Hegarty Takes on Jury President Role at EUROBEST http://jazarah.net/sir-john-hegarty-takes-on-jury-president-role-at-eurobest/ http://jazarah.net/sir-john-hegarty-takes-on-jury-president-role-at-eurobest/#comments Tue, 11 Sep 2012 16:10:07 +0000 Samer Marzouq http://jazarah.net/?p=47831 London, 11 September 2012 – Eurobest, Europe’s premier and largest creative communications festival, is delighted to announce that advertising legend Sir John Hegarty, Founder – Creative of Bartle Bogle Hegarty (BBH). will chair the Film, Print, Print & Poster Craft and Integrated juries.

“Sir John was a member of Eurobest’s first ever jury, so it’s fitting that he returns to lead the jury on Eurobest’s 25th anniversary. During these years he has created not only some of the most iconic and much loved ads of our time, but also ads that have changed the course of brand communications,” said Philip Thomas, CEO of Eurobest and Lions Festivals. “He is much admired by the whole industry, and we are delighted to welcome him back to help us celebrate this very special landmark for Eurobest.”

Commenting on his appointment, Sir John says, “Over the last 25 years our industry has gone through seismic change. What hasn’t changed is the need for outstanding creativity. Recognising that and rewarding it is as important as ever.”

Sir John started in advertising as a junior art director at Benton and Bowles, London, in 1965. In 1967 he joined the Cramer Saatchi consultancy which became Saatchi & Saatchi in 1970, where he was a founding shareholder. Sir John left in 1973 to co-found TBWA London as Creative Director. The agency was the first to be voted Campaign’s Agency of the Year in 1980.

In 1982 he started Bartle Bogle Hegarty with John Bartle and Nigel Bogle, which was soon to become one of the most talked about and awarded advertising agencies in the world. The agency has won every Agency of the Year accolade and every creative award possible and has been at the forefront of the industry for 29 years. BBH was Cannes Lions’ very first Agency of the Year in 1993 winning the title again the following year.

In the first two decades of BBH’s history, Sir John was responsible for campaigns for Levi’s such as the ground-breaking commercial starring an unknown model called Nick Kamen who stripped off down to his boxer shorts in a launderette, and introduced the British to the phrase ‘Vorsprung Durch Technik’ for Audi. He was the first to pick a young model/actor called Brad Pitt to star in a commercial and he also pioneered the importance of music in commercials. The result being the soundtracks from seven Levi’s commercials getting to the UK number one spot. John also oversaw the phenomenon Flat Eric, who kicked Eminem off the number one singles slot in 1999.

BBH now has offices in London, New York, Singapore, São Paulo, Shanghai and Mumbai and Sir John oversees the creative output of all these offices. This unique global structure also contributed to the company winning the Queen’s Award for Export Achievement twice, in 1996 and 1997.

Sir John has won Golds at every industry awards including Cannes Lions, D&AD and British Television. He has been given the D&AD President’s Award for outstanding achievement and was admitted to the US One Show Advertising Hall of Fame. He has also been voted as one of the most influential people in fashion thanks to his work with Levi’s.

Sir John was awarded a knighthood by the Queen in 2007 in recognition of his services to the advertising and creative industries.

In June 2011 Sir John successfully launched his book ‘Hegarty on Advertising – Turning Intelligence into Magic’. In the same month, he was honoured for his contribution to creativity at the Cannes International Festival of Creativity, being the first recipient of the inaugural Lion of St Mark’s Award.

Joining Sir John in Lisbon will be other prominent jury presidents from across Eurobest’s 25 year history shortly to be announced. A dedicated showcase will be present at the Festival to offer a retrospective look at the best in European creative communications, pulling together some of the greatest winners of the Eurobest awards to date. An archive of past winners of the Eurobest Grand Prix is currently online and can be found at http://www.eurobest.com/plus/grand_prix.cfm.

Graffiti Artist and Nightlife impresario Andre Saraiva’s latest art project will be launched on Thursday, September 6th. In partnership with ABSOLUT, he has created “AndreD2”, in collaboration with Brooklyn’s Square Design. “AndreD2” is an interactive robot that will come to life during New York Fashion Week, and host the stateside launch of “Couloir De La Night.” AndreD2 will be interviewing guests at Le Baron all week about their experience during NYC Fashion Week. This critically acclaimed program hails from France and will be making its US debut at Andre Saraiva’s Le Baron Chinatown, presented by ABSOLUT TUNE, a new product from Swedish vodka maker ABSOLUT. This project is the continuation of Andre Saraiva’s show ANDREPOLIS at NYC’s Hole Gallery; learn more about the ANDREPOLIS installation HERE.

“Couloir De La Night” is the brainchild of Felicia Massoni, the voice of the robot. The short-form program was launched in Paris, via a pink colored robot that was interacting with guests in the hallway of the infamous Le Baron in Paris. The series has gained notoriety within the creative community. The host has undergone a facelift, and will be reborn as AndreD2, ready to interact with patrons at Le Baron Chinatown. A new season, a new crowd, and some “new clothes” but with same attitude: provocative, nosy with a French accent and a sense of humor. The interviews will be edited into 5, two-minute HD videos, and will be launched online on Monday, September 17th.

ABSOLUT TUNE is a new product from Pernod-Ricard USA that will be introduced in the market this Fall. Swedish vodka producer ABSOLUT has paired up with Pernod-Ricard stablemate Brancott Estate to produce a ‘sparkling fusion’ of vodka and Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
