Abaya entirely made of UAE flags was designed to celebrate UAE 40th National Day
Dubai, November 30 2011 – To mark the UAE’s 40th National Day celebrations, the helipad of Burj Al Arab was the site that saw Emarati designer Lamya Abedin, showcase a 40-meter-long abaya made exclusively from 40 UAE flags.

The abaya, which took months to sew and is one of the longest abayas ever made, was worn by the designer herself and displayed from Burj Al Arab’s helipad, rising 280 meters above sea level. The event was photographed by Nabila Abbas, one of the region’s leading photographic talent, onboard a helicopter provided by SkyDive Dubai, the UAE’s state-of-the-art sky dive centre, who also provided the logistical support for the event.

Abedin said: “The UAE has left its mark on the world map and has set examples for others to follow with its cosmopolitan, multicultural society where all races, nationalities, and religions live in peace and harmony. This year, we all celebrate 40 years since the start of our nation and this is our way of taking part in marking this momentous occasion.”

About Lamya Abedin, Founder, Queen of Spades
For this Emarati woman with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration, life was more colourful than to pursue a 9 to 5 job. So Lamya Abedin’s ardent love for fashion, styling, makeup and interior decorating got the better of her. Having lived most of her life out of the UAE in various countries in the Gulf, Middle East, Europe and North Africa, Lamya decided to take a lesson in the diversity of cultures and create something unique and novel in the fashion industry. So Abedin blended the cultures she experienced into her designs, to give her national dress a whole new fashion statement.
Designing abayas started as a passion more than a business. It all started when she moved to Jeddah some years ago. She got her inspiration from Saudi fabrics, designs, workmanship, and craftsmanship. While searching for a special abaya for herself in Dubai, she wasn’t able to find that “one-of-a-kind” piece and that led her to create her own line of abayas – all individual pieces of creativity and exclusivity.
When many started to admire her unique ensembles she was encouraged to let her creativity take another step and build her brand – Queen of Spades. People wearing Lamya’s creation are most likely to be the only one in their city to own that piece. Therefore Lamya succeeded in making her women clientele feel so special and give the abaya a creative exuberance she always wanted to.
