Tablets find place of respect at regional boardrooms, shows Gartner study
A recent Gartner study into tablet devices in the enterprise has revealed what business leaders in the Middle East already know, that these devices are becoming invaluable workplace productivity tools.
Despite being positioned primarily as consumer devices, regional executives have been quick to pick up on the benefits of using tablets for corporate work, especially when presenting information, mobile working and for real time colleague communications.
“The trend for tablets such as Motorola XOOM as enterprise productivity devices may be relatively nascent, but we believe it’s going to become a significant part of the tablet market,” said Raed Hafez, General Manager for Motorola Mobility, MENA. “Once you start using one, you begin to understand that they are ideal devices for many corporate tasks, often replacing the need to carry a laptop.”
The Gartner report also highlights a number of usage scenarios for tablet devices in business while urging CIOs not to make the same mistakes as with smart phones which were written off too early as expensive toys.
One particularly interesting scenario is using tablets as a tool for providing business analytics and performance dashboards, as well as a more interactive and engaging way to share information and material in the field. A further innovation for relationship management systems is identified as a potential use in the future. Additional opportunities for using Motorola XOOM are in intimate settings, such as doctors and nurses walking patients through a diagnosis, medical procedure or therapy or retail clerks using the tablet to allow customers to view customized clothing.
“Using tablets as a replacement for PCs for basic office tasks is only just the start of an evolution – if not a revolution – in enterprise computing,” added Hafez. “As users get to grips with tablets and start to push the boundaries of what they do, expect to see thousands of innovative applications being developed for use within the enterprise environment. And with Motorola’s strong product and service offering in this space we’ll be supporting this trend all the way.”
