Computer Trends: Portable technology on-the-move
You may be inclined to think that the recent flood of tablet computers to hit the shops has sparked the inevitable death of the faithful notebook however, this isn’t the case. As consumer demands evolve, so too does technology and so the laptop/notebook market is currently in the midst of a revolutionary facelift.
Portable handheld technology is an increasing trend at the moment, and as life on-the-go continues to be fast paced, the devices we carry continue to get thinner and lighter. This is especially relevant for the busy professional. Although working on the move is nothing new, constant advances in cloud computing, portable technology and the ability to outsource business at the click of a button now means that enterprises in the region have less and less need to be tied to traditional office space.
IDC has reported that the demand for mobile connected devices is on the rise stating that by 2015, the world’s mobile worker population is expected to reach 1.3 billion representing 37.2% of the total workforce with the most significant gains coming from emerging economies such as the Middle East.
Last year Samsung released the thinnest notebook in the market, the second generation Series 9 available in 13” and 15” models. The 14.9mm thin design of the 15” model makes it almost 50 percent more compact than any existing 15-inch thin and light notebook in the market, with the 13” measuring only 12.9mm; 28 percent smaller than its previous model. Perfect for working on-the-move, the notebook boasts 3rd generation Intel® Core™ processor, 4GB/8GB* memory and 128GB/256GB* SSD with anti-aging battery technology allowing up to 10 hours of usage. In addition, the new Series 9 boots in 9.8 seconds and wakes in just 1.4-seconds with Fast Browsing providing 2-times faster web browsing.
For personal on-the-go use the tablet really steps up to the mark, acting as a complete entertainment hub suitable for all. Samsung’s GALAXY Tab 2 provides easy access to GoogleTM Mobile Services such as YouTube, Google Search and Google Talk as well as Samsung Hubs Services including readers, music, gaming and video Hubs. It offers smooth multitasking and a seamless multimedia experience via faster download speeds and quick web browsing. Available in 7” and 10.1” the GALAXY Tab 2 is bursting with practical features such as face recognition and face unlock, and staying connected is made easy through voice-call, video-call and Samsung’s free multimedia messenger service, ChatOn. Users can also host a group video call with up to 10 people at a time via Google+ Hangouts.
The worldwide tablet growth is undeniable with IDC reporting a growth of 139.1% in tablet shipments during the first quarter of 2013. It is clear that this growth shows no sign of slowing down; however characteristics of the trusty notebook such as productivity and performance will always be a key demand for consumers. One design to immerge from this dual demand of performance and portability is the notebook/tablet hybrid.
Samsung’s ATIV Smart PC Pro is a device designed for professionals that combines the power and productivity of a notebook PC with the convenience and portability of a tablet.
