Flip University Challenge launched in the UAE

A video competition to nurture young creatives across the emirates

Dubai, UAE, 08 March 2010: Cisco’s consumer division has launched its first inter university video competition titled, ‘Flip University Challenge’ for students across the UAE. The competition organised in collaboration with Khalifa University, aims to foster and develop the next generation of UAE creative minds.

During the month long competition, three teams comprising of five members from each university are invited to submit a short movie on the theme “Why choose my University?”. The theme gives students the opportunity to feature their college, fellow students, faculty, the campus and portray the essence of what makes their university unique and the best place to study. Participants will be given a Flip video to record their short movie with. To participate, students must register and upload their videos onto a specially created online application on http://www.facebook.com/flip.MiddleEast

The competition is open to all students currently enrolled at Khalifa University Sharjah, Khalifa University – Abu Dhabi Campus, HCT Women – Dubai, HCT Women – Sharjah, HCT Men – Sharjah, Zayed University Dubai, Zayed University Abu Dhabi, American University of Sharjah, American University of Dubai and Ajman University.

“The Flip University Challenge provides a unique platform for developing young talent to showcase their skills and creativity in making short movies. We are certain that the subject matter will lead to some creative and engaging footage and convey the power of film to inspire young people and communities,” said Mohammed Meraj Hoda, Managing Director, Emerging Markets, Cisco Consumer Products

“We have seen the UAE’s youthful population embrace the use of social media. A significant contributor to this growth is the ease of sharing video footage online with products such as Flip. Cisco is committed to supporting this growing social media trend and aims to be instrumental in empowering creativity in the personal video segment,” added Hoda.

The submissions will be judged by an eminent panel of judges including Ashraf Ghori, a popular filmmaker who was also the first to produce UAE’s first English superhero comic strip and Paul Kelly, managing editor of the region’s popular entertainment website www.triplew.me .
The winning team will receive five Flip Mino HD (up to 2 hour recording) with action tripods, while the runner-up team receives five Flip Mino HD (up to 1 hour recording). Further, the competition also has the “Public’s Choice Award”, where public have the option to cast their vote for their favorite video on the Flip Facebook page. The team behind the most popular video will receive five Flip Ultra HD camcorders.

To provide tips and inspiration, the Flip team comprising of video experts will visit all campuses providing the required demonstrations and tutorials for the competition.
