The National, the UAE’s quality English-language newspaper, is seeking a Lead Translator.

The Lead Translator is responsible for facilitating the work of other journalists by translating Arabic source materials into pitch-perfect English and helping conduct written and personal interviews with newsmakers. The Lead Translator also helps manage a small team of translators that is responsible for the daily production of an Arabic press digest and country reports.

We offer a very competitive salary and benefits package, including one flight home a year.

We would like to thank all applicants for their interest in these positions; however, only those who are considered for an interview will be contacted. Interested candidates should submit their CV and cover letter to [email protected].

Skills
The ideal candidate will be an Arabic speaker with native, or near-native proficiency in English, with at least 10 years experience in Journalism or a Journalism-related field. They will have a keen understanding of the requirements of various kinds of news copy – and of what is news and what isn’t – and be able to help foster a culture of excellence in the newsroom. With all the potential pitfalls facing journalists in the Middle East, he or she will need to be a real stickler for accuracy. Strong organisational abilities and a demonstrated ability to translate and produce reports under intense deadline pressure are required. They should also be flexible regarding work hours, including being available nights and weekends.
