The Spring issue covers Kalimat’s four dossiers: Current Affairs, Culture, Art and Design and New Media. The 150+ page issue is Kalimat’s Revolution Issue, marking one year since the Arab Spring began and cautiously reflecting on the immense change and renewal sweeping through the Arab world. Seeking to historicise the events of 2011 in fresh and interesting ways, this issue features pieces that focus on the current state of revolutionary fervour around the Arab world and how things have arrived to the present state of affairs. Articles include conversations with leading cultural producers across the Arab region and diaspora including a piece on the subculture of revolutionary cartoons and video art, a feature on grassroots political campaigns from the Egyptian revolution and a look at whether activists are leading the revolutions astray. Regular content like Kalimat’s engaging film and book reviews and an interview with groundbreaking designer Corinne Martin will also be featured. Also interviewed is the Oscar nominated filmmaker Rachid Bouchareb. Design reports include a feature on Life and Death – a fashion inspired building design that is both cemetery and hospital building.

Kalimat remains a platform for Arab cultural creatives to engage in thought and action around ideas, people and business moving the world forward. Thus, giving readers pages to turn, something to hold on to, and a magazine that will live in their shelves has become a foremost goal for Kalimat. Raising the $18,000 goal will allow the magazine to be printed, shipped and distributed internationally and ensure the continuation and longevity of the publication.
Kalimat also produces a podcast to accompany every issue: Isma3oo. Isma3oo No. 5 will include a variety of spoken and musical content with a focus on music and the musicians around the revolution. Isma3oo is available on iTunes, SoundCloud, or on our website.
