TEDxDoha set to make impactful debut with 'Fun and Important' event on October at Katara Cinema

With an amazing speaker line-up of accomplished technological, film and design professionals, ranging from three Academy Award nominees to Qatar’s first 3D filmmaker, TEDxDoha is set to make an impactful debut with this ‘Fun and Important’ event on October 29 at the Katara Cinema.

The inaugural TEDxDoha has been designed as an evening of inspirational and entertaining talks from leading professionals from the world of film, comedy and design, including Reem Acra, Ahmed Ahmed, Matt Aitken, Ahmed Al Baker, Rahab Elewaly, Salma Hayek Pinault and Taika Watiti. A musical interlude from Nitin Sawhney rounds out the evening.

The event will be simultaneously telecast in the Festival Lounge, located on the Katara Esplanade, to allow guests to enjoy and celebrate the talks in a relaxed environment. Guests can mingle with other TEDsters and interact with the speakers after the event. Unlike the live event in the Katara Cinema, where mobile devices and cell phones are not allowed, those in the Festival Lounge are encouraged to blog, Tweet, and update Facebook throughout the simulcast. The entire event will also be streamed live on the official website, so those not able to attend will still get to experience TEDxDoha.

To get tickets to the TEDxDoha simulcast at the Festival Lounge, and on the right hand side of the site you will see a button that says “Tickets” that will direct you to registration. After entering your information you will receive a confirmation email with further details.

Since 1984, TED (Technology-Entertainment-Design) has brought together the world’s greatest minds to discuss ‘ideas worth spreading’, with brilliance, creativity and humour. TEDx was created in the spirit of TED and the program is designed to give local communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through independently organized events.

The content and design of each TEDx event is unique and developed independently. The celebrated format includes exclusive talks by live speakers combined with TEDTalks videos to spark deep conversation and connections free of any commercial, religious or political agenda.

Writer, producer, director, Ahmed Al Baker said, “TEDxDoha is an amazing opportunity for Qataris to come together and celebrate the creative process. It will provide the community a platform to engage in an entertaining and educative environment and I look forward to presenting the rapidly evolving film landscape in Qatar to a global audience.”

“TEDx events empower people to highlight great modern thinkers within their own community. Our lineup is no exception,” commented Amanda Palmer, Executive Director of the Doha Film Institute. “We are very proud to have local self-made filmmaker Ahmed Al Baker speaking at the event and we invite Doha residents to support Ahmed in sharing his great ideas about his passion for film and his own creative process. Ahmed epitomises Qatari talent and represents this region’s creative community, who are committed to promoting filmmaking and telling their own stories. We are very excited to see Doha become part of the TEDx global community.”

TEDxDoha 2010 is presented by Doha Film Institute and sponsored by Virgin Mobile Qatar (a service provided by Qtel).
