Iraqi-Kurdish film director Hiner Saleem showcases feature film as part of monthly celebration of independent Arabic cinema alongside short film ‘Five Pounds’

23 September 2012, Abu Dhabi, UAE: AFLAM, Abu Dhabi’s monthly film club showcasing the best of independent Arabic cinema, will be screening ‘If you die, I’ll kill you’ (Si tu meurs, je te tue) by Iraqi-Kurdish director Hiner Saleem, preceded by twofour54 creative lab short film, ‘Five Pounds’. The screening will be held at VOX Cinemas at Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi at 8pm on 26th September. Guests are invited to arrive at 7pm for an hour of networking with fellow film lovers.

‘If you Die, I’ll Kill You’ was presented at the Hong Kong Film Festival in 2012 and will be presented at the German ‘Filmmuseum’ later this year. While making his film, Saleem looked to incorporate themes his audience could relate to, using his own experiences as a refugee and the challenges that came with living in a foreign land.

‘If you die, I’ll kill you’ is about the unlikely friendship between a Kurdish refugee, Avdal, who travels to Paris in search of an Iraqi war criminal, and a Frenchman Philippe, who has recently been released from prison. Avdal’s fiancée Siba travels to Paris only to find Avdal dead and Philippe organising the funeral with a group of Kurds who later take Siba in. Avdal’s father goes to Paris to mourn the passing of his son and insists that Siba return with him to their homeland – Siba, however, has already had a taste of freedom.

The twofour54 creative lab-funded short film, ‘Five Pounds’ is directed by Mohamed Adeeb, an ambitious director whose first film was showcased at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. ‘Five Pounds’ has been accepted by 28 film festivals in 14 different countries and has won five international awards including the first prize at the film festival in Grasse, France and the Silver Bear at the Festival of Nations in Austria. The film is about an old woman who begins to worry when a menacing and mysterious man starts to follow her and corners her in the dark streets of Cairo.

Supported by twofour54, AFLAM was launched following on the success of a film club that Nayla Al Khaja and D-SEVEN Motion Pictures founded in Dubai in November 2007, and aims to provide a platform for all film industry members and fans to network and view quality regional films in Abu Dhabi.  Subtitled in English, all AFLAM films have an international appeal, with most having been screened at major film festivals around the globe. The founders of AFLAM are proud to have introduced such a platform to Abu Dhabi and continue to support a vibrant film culture in the UAE.

Offering complimentary seats, Arabic and English subtitles, a chance to talk to film directors and a forum for industry professionals and film fans to network, AFLAM invites guests to reserve their tickets on www.aflamclub.com. The tickets can be collected at the AFLAM Registration Desk at VOX Cinemas Marina Mall Abu Dhabi from 7.00pm and guests are encouraged to arrive on time as seating is offered on a “first come first served” basis.
