Sharjah Media Corporation (SMC) has announced its sponsorship of the 29th Sharjah International Book Fair, which kicks off today (Tuesday) under the patronage of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

The book fair is being held at the Sharjah Expo in the presence of prominent literary and media figures, as well as leading publishing houses and publishers from Arab countries and the world.

The Corporation is seeking, through sponsoring the book fair ˗ the largest and most prestigious cultural event in the region ˗ to enhance its strategic partnership and cooperation with the Department of Culture and Information, who is organizingr the fair.

In line with its strategy, the Corporation will utilize its full capacity, employing both audio and visual media, in covering the fair and its accompanying events.

Speaking on the occasion, Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, Board Chairman of the Corporation, said: “Sharjah radio and television has undertaken the responsibility of engaging in the emirate’s cultural project in line with the directives of His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, to boost the cultural position of the emirate locally, regionally and internationally. This fact is demonstrated by the Corporation’s sponsorship and support of various cultural events and activities taking place in the emirate throughout the year.

“The Corporation is particularly proud of being the exclusive media sponsor of the book fair, which is characterized by the Department of Culture and Information’s professional organization, as this year’s exhibition is expected to help elevate the Arabic book publishing industry. It also promises to offer books for everyone,” Sheikh Sultan said.

He added: “We will spare no effort to provide all forms of support to this major cultural event, of which we are very proud.”

Abdullah Al Owais, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Deputy Chairman of the Corporation, said that the Corporation is devoting all its television channels and radio stations to ensure the best ever coverage of the event. This will be done through fully equipped studios as well as an army of journalists – a work team of more than 100 people – who will cover the book fair over 21 days.

He added: “We can benefit from this cultural event, which not only brings together prominent intellectuals and lettermen from the Arab world and the entire globe under one roof, but also raises significant literary and cultural issues for live discussion.”
